Help Children Overcome Fear of the Dentist

happy childrenParents are responsible for introducing their children to dental hygiene and oral health care. Teaching them to brush and floss their teeth every day is one of the first and most important experiences in their young lives, but a lifetime of good oral health care also involves routine visits to the dentist’s office. For many children, the first dentist’s visit can be disconcerting, surrounded by strangers and not knowing what to expect. To help your children overcome their fear of the dentist, your Cupertino family dentist, Dr. Randall LaFrom, offers these tips to make their first visit less intimidating.

Get an Early Start

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends bringing your child to the dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the first birthday. These initial visits, and subsequent checkups and cleanings, will help children become familiar with the dentist’s office, where all of their routine and emergency dental needs are met. At LAFROM DENTISTRY, we encourage our parents to bring their child in for a simple FIRST initial visit where we count their teeth, squirt water into their mouth, let them get comfortable being in the chair and having a light on their mouth. What is Your Toothache Trying to Tell You?

•August 27, 2013 • Leave a Comment

woman in green with a toothacheToothaches are not usually trivial matters, and when one strikes your tooth, it can mean that immediate attention and treatment are necessary to preserve your oral health. Before you can treat a toothache, however, you must first know what’s causing it, then address the issue to prevent any further damage or threat to your tooth. Your Cupertino dentist, Dr. Randall LaFrom, helps you take the first step to finding toothache relief by explaining some of the more common causes of tooth discomfort.

Common Causes for Toothaches

Cavities

When tooth decay grips your tooth, the infection eats away at your tooth’s structure, causing small holes (cavities) to form in your tooth. When your tooth is compromised, the vulnerable nerves and blood vessels at its center become subject to bacterial infection and other irritations, causing varying degrees of discomfort (depending on the severity of your cavity). When is Tooth Extraction Necessary? Your Cupertino Dentist Explains

•August 21, 2013 • Leave a Comment

pretty girl hand over mouthLosing a tooth may not exactly seem like a preferable treatment option. In fact, tooth loss is one of the most severe results of the dental diseases that your oral hygiene is designed to prevent. Nevertheless, there are certain instances when extracting one or more of your teeth is necessary for the good of your oral health, in which case replacing them is just as necessary. Today, your Cupertino dentist, Dr. Randall LaFrom, explains when tooth extraction would actually be a good thing, and why.

Reasons for Tooth Extraction

Extensive Damage

Although your teeth are the strongest part of your body, they’re not indestructible, and unlike your bones, they can’t repair themselves when damaged or infected with disease. If severe damage renders your tooth, it may no longer effectively withstand the pressures of use. In extreme cases, such as a cracked tooth root, the tooth likely can’t be saved and will need extraction and replacement. Continue reading ‘When is Tooth Extraction Necessary? San Jose Dentist: Things to Know for a Good Dental Hygiene Routine

•July 23, 2013 • Leave a Comment

skeptical womanIf asked, most people would claim that they’re pretty diligent about keeping up with their dental hygiene routines. Many of them may not even realize that “forgetting” to brush and floss once in a while, or just passing the brush over their teeth a couple of times, does not, in fact, constitute good dental hygiene practices. Considering the fact that 90% of adults in America have been affected by permanent tooth decay, and 80% have some degree of gum disease, it’s safe to assume that some hygiene routines have plenty of room for improvement. To help you preserve the health and integrity of your smile, your San Jose dentist, Dr. LaFrom, offers some advice on how to maximize your dental hygiene routine.

How Much Do You Know About Teeth Brushing?

Did you know that there’s a right and wrong way to brush your teeth? The point is to brush food debris and dental plaque from the surfaces of your teeth, but if you brush too hard, you may scrub off your teeth’s enamel (the protective layer surrounding your teeth). Be sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush with the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval, and brush gently. Also, take care to brush every surface of every tooth, and floss carefully between every tooth. Dental diseases only require a small amount of plaque to develop, and your diligence can make the difference between a healthy and a diseased smile.
