Implant Procedure

Before the Implant Procedure

Before Dr. LaFrom can place your dental implant, he will perform a comprehensive exam to determine if you are a viable candidate. Eligibility for dental implants depends on a number of factors, including dental health and the amount of jawbone present to support the implant. If Dr. LaFrom concludes that you are able to receive an implant, he will take one or more digital X-rays of the area to prepare for the procedure.

During the Implant Procedure

Anesthesia and light sedation are commonly administered to maximize patient comfort during implant placement. In addition, Dr. LaFrom utilizes the latest technology to significantly reduce the healing time normally associated with dental surgery. With state-of-the-art guided surgical techniques, Dr. LaFrom will place the implant in your jaw using a technique known as keyhole surgery. This technique is much less invasive than traditional open surgery. Rather than opening tissue to place the implant, Dr. LaFrom inserts a small camera into the area, through a minimal incision. The image is displayed on a television monitor, and through another small incision, Dr. LaFrom can perform the procedure by watching the monitor. In most cases, keyhole surgery allows Dr. LaFrom to place the implant in one visit.

After the Implant Procedure

After the implant is placed, bruising and swelling is normal in the gums. Any discomfort can be treated with an over-the-counter painkiller, and you should be able to return to work the next day. Dr. LaFrom will apply a temporary crown while the tissue heals and your jawbone fuses to the implant (which usually takes three months). After Dr. LaFrom attaches the permanent restoration, your new tooth must be cared for and checked regularly. Brush, floss, and attend a dental checkup as often as Dr. LaFrom advises, and your new tooth may last for life!
