Cupertino CA Dentist Lists Three Benefits of Dental Braces

smile 7Have you considered straightening your teeth to achieve your ideal smile? If so, there are several reasons to go ahead and opt for dental braces. To learn about these reasons, consult the following list provided by your Cupertino CA dentist, Dr. Randall LaFrom.

Benefits of Wearing Braces

  1. They can lower the risk of tooth decay. When teeth are misaligned, they tend to overlap one another. When teeth overlap, small crevices are created in which bacteria can hide. These crevices are difficult to access, making brushing and flossing more difficult. Unfortunately, if bacteria are not removed from these hard-to-reach areas, they may be able to attack teeth, causing tooth decay. In addition, the presence of these bacteria also increases the risk of gum disease.
  2. They can eliminate TMJ disorders. A temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder results from excessive strain on the temporomandibular joints (TMJs). These joints are located on either side of the face just to the front of and beneath the earlobes. Their function is to open and close the mouth, and although they are very active—they are used in speaking, eating, and drinking—they are also delicate. One way that the TMJs can suffer strain is through malocclusion (a misaligned bite). When teeth do not fit together properly, the TMJs will be stressed each time the teeth are forced to come together. Thankfully, however, orthodontic treatment can correct bite problems, relieving the strain on the TMJs.
  3. A beautiful smile. The ultimate end goal of orthodontic treatment is to leave patients with smiles that they are excited to show off. Having a beautiful smile can be a great source of confidence, and by contrast, having a misaligned smile can be a significant source of embarrassment and self-doubt. Therefore, orthodontic treatment can profoundly impact self-esteem by helping patients achieve their ideal smiles.
