San Jose Dentist Explains the Wisdom of Preemptive Tooth Extraction

checking wisdom toothIf you or someone you know has ever needed a wisdom tooth extracted, you probably understand why. As the last teeth to grow in, wisdom teeth can often disturb teeth that are already present and lead to a host of dental complications, not to mention sometimes-debilitating discomfort. While the extreme toothaches frequently lead to extraction, many people choose to remove wisdom teeth before they even have a chance to cause trouble. Your San Jose dentist, Dr. LaFrom, explains the wisdom in preemptively extracting your final molars before they can disturb the harmony of your oral health.

The Dangers of Wisdom Teeth

The problem with wisdom teeth, officially known as your third molars, is that, when it’s time for them to erupt, there is usually little room left for them to grow. As a result, the molars can press against present teeth and grow awkwardly, sometimes only partially erupting or becoming impacted and not erupting at all. The force can push your present teeth out of their proper placement, and in some cases, cysts (fluid-filled sacs) can form as a result of the impaction, damaging surrounding teeth and oral tissues.

Why Do We Have Wisdom Teeth?

So why do we grow a set of teeth that our mouths barely have room for? Experts believe the extra teeth are a remnant of our ancestors, who survived on a much rougher diet of raw vegetation, nuts, roots, and other tough foods. As our diets became considerably softer and our jaws grew smaller, the final molars became more of a nuisance than an advantage. Some wisdom teeth still erupt without any trace of trouble, but since a third set of molars is no longer necessary, preemptively extracting them is often preferred to avoid the risk of damage and discomfort.
