Dental Health and Overall Health Go Hand in Hand

Just like there are six pillars of character, there are four pillars of general health. Dr. Randy LaFrom, a cosmetic and general dentist in Cupertino, California, strives to provide quality dental care for his patients. A large part of that includes advising his patients on ways to lead healthy and high-quality lives.

Follow these dental and general health tips:

Smoking: The number one influencing factor that has been shown time and time again in periodontal disease is smoking. Smokers are five times more likely to have periodontal disease than nonsmokers. Additionally, it has been found that smoking decreases vitamin C levels in the body, which is detrimental to health because vitamin C helps with healing, to improve the strength of blood vessel walls, and is a powerful antioxidant that helps to reduce the aging of cells.

Water: The human body is made up primarily of water, however, we are constantly losing water through sweat, urine, tears, and even breathing. Most health professionals recommend drinking at least eight glasses (2 quarts) of water per day. Water is good for you for a number of reasons. It is necessary to transport nutrients throughout the body, remove waste products, lubricate joints, and regulate body temperature.

Diet: Eat a balanced diet that contains a good mix of meats, vegetables, and fruits with a minimum of sugary snacks, soft drinks, and coffee. Dr. LaFrom has found that his patients with the least number of cavities tend to rarely drink sodas and intake minimal coffee, sugary snacks, and drink a lot of water.

Stress: This is another factor that can contribute to dental related problems such as teeth clenching and grinding. A couple of simple tips to help reduce this is to cut down on alcohol, try to relax before going to bed, talking with a friend, reading, or meditating. If you do clench your teeth, it can cause headaches and extensive wear on the biting surfaces of your teeth.

Additionally, activities like exercising and taking vitamin supplements will help ensure a healthy immune system and lifestyle. Call Dr. LaFrom at (408) 996-8595 for more information about general and dental health, or to schedule an appointment.
