Ten Tooth Trivia Tidbits

As you’re sitting around the holiday table with the family this month, what are you going to talk about? If you want to look like a braniac, try out these tooth trivia facts on your family.

  • Most adults have 32 teeth: 4 wisdom, 8 incisors, 4 canines, 12 molars, and 8 premolars.
  • Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the human body. The only naturally occurring substance on the planet that’s stronger is diamonds.
  • One-quarter of Americans over age 60 have lost all of their natural teeth.
  • Most adults can boast about 20-40 lbs. of pressure in their bite, but a large percentage can exert up to 250 lbs. of force. Whammo!
  • The acid from sodas and citrus erode tooth enamel, but so does overly chlorinated swimming pool water.
  • Americans use 14 million gallons of toothpaste annually.
  • Of Americans over age 35, 80% have gum disease. Gum disease is the primary cause of tooth loss for adults in our country.
  • Most people don’t know they have bad breath. Dry mouth is a major cause of bad breath – so drink water!
  • People who use an electric toothbrush tend to brush longer, which is good, but an electric toothbrush isn’t more effective at removing plaque than a hand-held toothbrush.
  • Half of Americans don’t visit the dentist regularly.

I’m Dr. Randall LaFrom, a cosmetic and general dentist in Cupertino, CA, and I want to invite you to become a fan on my Facebook page. Your comments are welcome here on the blog or on Facebook. Tell me what you think!
