Keep Your Child Away from Dental Cavities

According to Dr. LaFrom – one of the popular dentists in Cupertino, eating unhealthy foods can be taken as the most important reason for the rise in number of children having dental cavities. Children often have an affinity towards processed foods, soda and other bottled sugary drinks. This affinity leads to them to consume these unhealthy and junk foods rather than healthy snacks like fruits and nuts. However, the practice of good oral hygiene, regular visits to the dentist and healthy eating habits can help keep your children cavities at bay.

To begin with your child’s teeth-care routine, ensure that his/her baby teeth remain healthy and free from infection. Teach your child the process to brush properly using the side-to-side as well as the up-and-down strokes. Also help your child understand how he/she should brush around his/her gum line for a minimum of two minutes, twice every day.

Ensure that your child develops a healthy eating habit by encouraging the intake of fresh vegetables, raw fruits, nuts, low-fat dairy products and whole-grain breads. If your child craves for sweets, allow him/her to have it either after a main meal or as a dessert. Remember – frequent and late-night snacking are the major culprits that cause cavities in children.

Dr. LaFrom advises parents against sharing utensils or cups with their children if they have cavities. As cavities are contagious, they can pass onto your child if you do so. He also advises parents to stop smoking as research has shown that parents who smoke have higher chances of having children who develop cavities.
