What to Look For When Choosing a Dentist?

We realize it can be a difficult decision choosing a new dentist. If you are currently evaluating new dentists we recommend you follow the steps recommended by the American Dental Association (ADA), which we are a part of and support.

  1. Consider several dentists before making your final decision.
  2. During your first visit, you should be able to determine if this is the right dentist for you.
  3. Is the appointment schedule convenient for you?
  4. Is the office easy to get to from your home or job?
  5. Does the office appear to be clean, neat and orderly?
  6. Was your medical and dental history recorded and placed in a permanent file?
  7. Does the dentist explain techniques that will help you prevent dental health problems?
  8. Is dental health instruction provided?
  9. Are special arrangements made for handling emergencies outside of office hours?
  10. Is information provided about fees and payment plans before treatment is scheduled?
  11. Is your dentist a member of the ADA?

You and your dentist are partners in maintaining your oral health. Take time to ask any questions you may have. For more unbiased information from the ADA read their article Tips for Choosing a Dentist.

We also recommend you choose a dentist who;

  1. Has been in business long enough to have experience with many different dental conditions.
  2. Spends time updating their clinical skills and invests in the latest technologies.
  3. Can provide many references of long-term patients who trust and recommend the dental office.

Conversely it is not wise to choose a dentist according to;

  1. Cost – unfortunately the cost of dental care varies widely, and too often, low cost can equate to poor quality.
  2. Advertising – flashy advertising has nothing to do with the quality of the dental services.
  3. Personality – a dentist with a great personality is always nice but doesn’t guarantee the best dental quality.

We are always excited about bringing new patients into our office and encourage you to contact our office anytime with any  questions or to discuss your specific situation.
